Whitehawk Hill is an
ancient grass land that overlooks Brighton. It has been common land since
before enclosure in 1882, after which it became a recreational common ‘for the
inhabitants of Brighton’. In 2019 local people were successful in stopping
Brighton and Hove council’s proposed high-rise development on the hill. My project with the campaign involved discussions about our personal connections to this land and a ceramic marker, highlighting the common legacy of the hill.
